The State of Qatar Participates in Group of 77 and China Ministerial Meeting

The State of Qatar participated Thursday in the virtual ministerial meeting of the Group of 77 and China on maintaining a low-carbon development path towards the 2030 agenda in the era of COVID-19.

The State of Qatar was represented in the meeting by HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi. His Excellency stressed during his speech that the State of Qatar will continue to cooperate with the international community in alleviating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

His Excellency said that given the importance of a comprehensive response to the impact of climate change, the State of Qatar played a leading role in international efforts on that front. He noted that HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani announced during the Climate Action Summit in September 2019 that the State of Qatar will contribute $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the climate change.

His Excellency said that Qatar Fund for Development is currently designing a funding mechanism to provide that money to those countries in order to face the climate change challenge.

HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs noted that the State of Qatar is working on regulating the pricing of Carbon products as a way to limit Carbon emissions, and as part of its efforts to direct investments towards cleaner alternatives. He added that the country also adopted scientific strategies to protect the environment and to decrease the reliance on hydrocarbons.

HE Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi added that the State of Qatar was proud of the Doha amendments to the Kyoto Protocol, part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

He said that the State of Qatar looks forward to hosting the 5th UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-V) will take place from Jan. 23-27, 2027. He added that Qatar is confident the new work programme for the next decade will prove to be an important opportunity to support the least developed countries in facing the challenges related to climate change.
