Doha/ 15 May 2014/HE the Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah led Qatar's delegation to the meeting of the Friends off Syria basic group held today in London. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers of the group's member countries and representative of the Syrian opposition. The meeting discussed the massive random acts of violence perpetrated by the Syrian regime against civilians, the best ways of supporting the Syrian opposition, achievement of urgent progress towards the alleviation of the increasingly deteriorating humanitarian crisis and the revival of the political process which stumbled due to the regime's reluctance to negotiate. In a statement to Qatar News Agency(QNA), HE the Foreign Minister said the Friends of Syria group has condemned the illegitimate elections conducted by the regime at the expense of innocent Syrian people's lives, calling on the international community to categorically reject such illegitimate elections because they contradict the concepts of democracy, freedom and justice. Dr. Al Attiyah held the Syrian regime responsible for the barbarism and mass annihilation of the Syrian people, as well as the escalation of violence and the prevention of access of humanitarian assistance to the victims of the war that has been waged by the regime for three years. He added that the Friends of Syria group agreed during the meeting to increase support to the moderate opposition by backing the national alliance, announcing that member states of the basic group have directed senior officials to prepare a plan of action to face all possibilities.
