Qatar Participates in a UN Workshop

Geneva/ 01 June 2014/ Qatar has participated in the workshop organized by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on "The Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights by the Affected Populations, in particular their socioeconomic impact on women and children in the States targeted." Director of the Human Rights Department at the Foreign Ministry HE Sheikh Khalid bin Jassim Al-Thani has represented the state of Qatar in the work-sessions. The workshop was organized in response to the Human Rights Council's resolution 24/14 for discussing the issue of "Human Rights and the Unilateral Coercive Measures," which Qatar has voted for. The report on the proceedings of the workshop will be submitted to the Human Rights Council at its twenty-seventh session in September. It is noteworthy that the term "unilateral coercive measures" usually refers to economic measures taken by one state to compel a change in the policy of another state. The Human Rights Council's resolution 24/14 stresses that unilateral measures are not in accordance with international law, the Charter of the United Nations and the principles governing peaceful relations between nations, because it is one of the main obstacles in implementing UN Declaration of Human Rights to Development. A wide range of state members' representatives, experts, academia and civil society and human rights agencies have participated in the workshop. The Advisory Committee on the Human Rights Council is preparing a study on mechanisms for assessing the negative effects of unilateral measures on the enjoyment of human rights.
