GCC Foreign Ministers Meet in Jeddah

Jeddah/ 30 August 2014/ The 132th session of GCC Foreign Ministers Council began in Jeddah Saturday, chaired by Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. HE Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah participated in the meeting. In his opening speech, the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister praised GCC member countries' cooperation and eagerness to forge ahead with their blessed joint march. He warned that the GCC states are facing a growing threat of terrorism by groups that use Islam to justify the murder and displacement of peaceful civilians, criticizing those groups as being " far from its (Islam's) tolerant humanitarian message." He welcomed the UN Security Council Resolution No. 2170 which called on the international community to work on suppressing the flow of foreign fighters, financing and other support terrorist and extremist groups. Commenting on the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, the Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached on August 26 between the Palestinian and Israeli sides. He then called on the international community to activate United Nations resolutions related to the conflict and provide protection for the Palestinian people, as well as lift the Israeli siege imposed on Gaza Strip. The Kuwaiti Foreign Minister said that the crises storming through the Arab World and leading to rising death tolls in different areas call on the GCC to stress its commitment to the stability of the region, adding that the council is willing to help to reach that goal. For his part, Kuwait's First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said that the meeting dealt with some of the issues related to joint GCC work. He added that the Foreign Ministers have placed standards to overcome these shortcomings in the future. He stressed that all GCC member countries were not happy at the obstacles of the past and are keen to overcome it in the future, adding that the need to advance joint GCC work has become more urgent in light of the threats surrounding the region. He stressed that such threats will not obstruct the GCC joint work that has been ongoing for the past 33 years. As for the return of the ambassadors, Al-Sabah revealed that it could happen at any moment. He added that the council has placed the mechanism for overcoming the previous obstacles and as a result the return of the ambassadors could happen at any moment. On the speech made by US President Barack Obama regarding the creation of a coalition to face terrorist threat and the role that US Secretary of State John Kerry will play in that regard, he said that the GCC is waiting to find out more about the coalition and its goals in the coming period, revealing that they do not have enough details on Obama's proposal. On a joint Egyptian-GCC initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis, the Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister said that the Syrian crisis is a priority for the Council, adding that the council is pained by the deterioration of the situation in Syria. He added that this issue will be discussed in the upcoming Arab League ministerial meeting on September 7.
