Qatar Welcomes Formation of New Iraqi Government

New York/Information Office / 20 September 2014/ HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah described the formation of a new government in Iraq as a promising step, expressing the State of Qatar's hope that this would be reflected positively on the situation in Iraq and the region after long years during which it witnessed painful events. Addressing a special ministerial meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Friday, HE Al-Attiyah said while we look forward to the completion of the formation of the Iraqi government in order to be able to face the serious challenges, particularly terrorism, the participation of all components of the Iraqi people is the most effective way to address the serious threats faced by Iraq to ensure the unity and success of the national unity government in its efforts to address these serious challenges. He stressed that this will not be achieved without a serious and comprehensive national dialogue, emphasizing the support of the State of Qatar for the Iraqi brothers in any step that would consolidate the unity and preserve the integrity of Iraq. HE Al-Attiyah expressed belief that the success of the international community in the fight against terrorism will not be achieved without a political will and concerted international efforts while addressing the root causes that led to the formation of an incubator for terrorism. This requires above all depriving these terrorist organizations from funding sources, not to succumb to their extortion, and not to link terrorism with religion, nationality or region, he said. The lessons learned from the growing terrorist organizations in the region is that those organizations have benefited from the results of the repressive policies of the dictatorship systems resulting in a security vacuum and a sense of injustice among the affected social classes, HE Al-Attiyah explained, adding that those organizations, which were rejected by the international community due to their criminal policies and grave violations of international law and human rights, have promoted themselves as a partner in the international campaign against terrorism. We believe that the terrorist organizations and those systems are two sides of the same coin, both are working against the interests of the people, peace, security and stability in the world, HE Al-Attiyah explained. He stressed that the political and security challenges should not distract the international community from its responsibilities towards the serious humanitarian situation faced by the Iraqi people, expressing concern over the disastrous numbers of victims and displaced. Qatar had established an air bridge for humanitarian aid in Iraq and would continue to assist its neighbours.
