FOREIGN MINISTER: "JUSTICE, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PART OF AGENDA BEYOND 2015"

New York/ Information Office/ 26 February 2015/Based on Qatar's initiative , in partnership with Italy , Thailand, Mexico and Morocco, the UN General Assembly held a high-level meeting to discuss the theme of "Integrating the crime prevention and criminal justice' into the wider UN post-2015 Development Agenda. The UN General Assembly high-level meeting shed light on the 13th congress on crime prevention and criminal justice which slated to be held in Doha, Qatar, on 12-19 April 2015. In a televised statement , HE Qatar's Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Mohammad Al Attiyah expressed his satisfaction over justice and economic and social development which were formed two essential elements to ensure success for development agenda beyond 2015. Today our meeting provides a unique opportunity for an exchange of views on close interdependence between rule of law and development, Al Attiyah said adding that the meeting discussed proposals and recommendations on practical actions and initiatives that we have taken to address social and economic challenges and to promote sustainable development through strengthening systems and norms and standards in crime prevention and criminal justice. HE Dr. al-Attiyah noted that this year opens rare prospect of changing our world and we should continue work to ensure success for development agenda beyond 2015. He pointed out that the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice which convenes in Doha next April , will be held at an important stage where issues of rule of law and development agenda beyond 2015 will top its agenda. Dr. Khalid Al-Attiyah asserted Qatar's commitment to working closely with all UN General Assembly Member States to ensure the realization of the aspirations to be included in the Doha Declaration and to make this political document as a starting point for a new era. He added that Qatar pledges to make every possible effort to make13th conference as part of the international community's efforts to face challenges in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, based on the responsibility of the State of Qatar for this important conference which will bring together UN Member States at the highest levels of representation of the work in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice and promotion of the rule of law at the national and international levels to achieve justice for all. HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani chaired the first session of the meeting, which discussed the theme "Towards sustainable development: successes and challenges in the implementation of comprehensive policies on crime prevention and criminal justice". The State of Qatar was represented at the high-level meeting by HE Major General Dr. Abdullah Yusuf Al-Maal, Advisor to HE the Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice , Dr Ahmed Hassan al-Hammadi, Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs ,who also served as deputy chairman of the Preparatory Committee for 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice along with HE Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Qatar's Ambassador to Austria and its Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna.
