QATAR REITERATES AMBITIOUS PROGRAMS IN PEACEFUL USE OF NUCLEAR POWER

Vienna/ 02 March 2015/ Qatar has ambitious programs for the peaceful use of nuclear power and prioritizes nuclear safety issues in its future projects, HE Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Doha's ambassador to Austria and permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and international organizations, said. Speaking during the spring session of IAEA's board of governors under the article on enhancing the organization's nuclear safety-related activities, HE Al Mansouri said Qatar has submitted in November its ratification document of the amendments to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material, which was signed in 2005. He hailed IAEA's efforts in promoting nuclear safety, which was one of the motivations for Qatar to pursue its future projects in the peaceful use of nuclear power. Al Mansouri said the report of the IAEA's director general provides convenient reassurances on indicators of operational safety for nuclear plants, stressing the need to exert more efforts in light of the aging operating nuclear plants and the need of countries to be ready to react in cases of violent accidents and natural disasters.
