Qatar Keen on More Information Technology, Communications Projects

Geneva /Information Office/ 26 May 2015/ Qatar has been carrying out programs and projects to enable its residents to use information technology and communications through capacity building programs and raising digital awareness, particularly among those who lack the skills and tools of information technology such as people with disabilities and the elderly. Qatar's permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva, HE Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al-Henzab, made the remarks as he addressed the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2015, which lasts until May 29. HE the ambassador said Qatar has worked hard in the past decade to implement WSIS working plans under the direction and supervision of HE Minister of Information and Communications Technology Dr. Hessa Al-Jaber. He added that Qatar has enhanced the infrastructure of information technology and communications by extending the optic fiber network, which is expected to reach a penetration of 95 percent by 2016 to provide Qatari households with broadband internet at affordable prices. Going hand in hand with that, the ambassador noted, Qatar is working to ensure the security and privacy of citizens by establishing the proper legal and regulative frameworks and educating citizens on how to reduce the risk of using information technology and communications.
