Qatar Stresses Promotion of Women's Rights as Government Responsibility

Geneva/Information Office/17 June 2015/ The State of Qatar has underlined that the promotion and protection of women's rights, and the Elimination of practices that constitute violence against them , is primarily the responsibility of Governments, and out of conviction the State's leadership have been working towards the advancement and empowerment of women and enhance their role in society through the development of legislative guarantees and the establishment of national mechanisms, said the Second Secretary of Qatar Permeant Mission at Geneva Nor Al Sada, . Al Sada was speaking at the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women. Its causes and consequences, in item (3), within the framework of the 29th session of the Human Rights Council. In the field of combating violence against women, Al Sada noted that the State has enacted laws which focus on the protection of women against all causes of violence most important of which were the family, law and the law against trafficking in human beings. It also included cases of violence against women in national strategies and plans, policies and programmes to address them through the establishment of specialized institutions which shelter the victims of violence and provide them with social services, including health care, social rehabilitation and legal and other consultants. The State also supports the NGOs working in this area, she added. Al Sada stressed the need that regional human rights conventions and mechanisms for their enforcement should contribute to strengthening international standards on violence against women. She said that the resolutions of the General Assembly and the Human Rights Council, which call for cooperation with regional mechanisms, stress the importance of regional charters to bridge the gap with these standards, especially since these instruments were dealing with human rights taking into account the cultural specificities and common values in the selected geographical area.
