Qatar's Ambassador in Washington Highlights US Effective Role in Solving Regional Conflicts

Washington/InformationOffice/1 November 2015/The United States has important and effective role in the convergence of views among regional powers, HE Qatar's Ambassador in Washington Mohammed Jaham Al Kuwari said. HE the Qatari Ambassador delivered a speech in the University of Kentucky on the future of the Qatari-US relations in the context of the geopolitical changes taking place in the Middle East. He lauded the decision to award Nobel Peace Prize to the National Dialogue Quartet in Tunisia, saying it was a cause for hope at a time of despair and frustration in the region. The Ambassador said that Qatar was among the first countries that supported the Tunisian revolution, but things have changed a lot since the outbreak of the Arab Spring in Tunisia, where peaceful demonstrations quickly turned into a terrifying cycle of killing, displacement and destruction. On the Syrian issue, the Qatari Ambassador expressed concern about the recent developments in Syria and said that what is happening in Syria is an alliance between regional and international forces to protect a regime that has lost its legitimacy long ago. He stressed the importance of the US role in the region, saying that the Arab world needs that role more than ever because of the chaos, division and insecurity. On Yemen, HE Al Kuwari said the time has come to end the conflict in Yemen and intensify joint efforts for the reconstruction of Yemen, the restoration of security and stability in the country, and the resumption of the national dialogue between the conflicting parties. He called on Washington to cooperate with the Gulf states to ensure that Yemen not turned into another Syria. He warned the foreign interference in Yemen, saying that providing support for the Houthis will not lead to the dialogue table, but to the sustainability of the conflict between the conflicting parties. Concluding, the Ambassador referred to HH the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's speech before the UN General Assembly in September, in which he urged dialogue with Iran, and the rebuilding of relations with Tehran on the basis of common interests and the principle of good neighborliness, adding that these common interests include cooperation to stop the bloody conflicts in the Arab world, help millions of Syrian refugees to return to their homeland, and to work together to achieve peace and security in the region.
