Qatar to Continue Efforts in Promoting Global Social Development

New York/Information Office/ 10 February 2016/ The State of Qatar has assured to continue its efforts to promote social development in the world, whether through its membership in the UN Commission for Social Development or working with partners in the international community to push the development process to ensure a decent life for all. This came in Qatar's statement delivered by HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations before the 54th session of the UN Commission for Social Development in the framework of the third item "Rethinking and Strengthening Social Development in the Contemporary World". HE Sheikha Alia said in the statement that the State of Qatar paid special importance to the social development represented in Qatar National Vision 2030, which the social structure is one of its basic pillars. Qatar have a unique experience in the field of strengthening the institutional structure for Social Development which crystallized in the establishment of the Qatar Foundation for Social Action which undertakes the supervision and observation of many institutions concerned with social development such as, Qatar Foundation for Protection and Social Rehabilitation, Family Consulting Center, Qatar Foundation for the Care of the Elderly and the Shafallah Center for Children with Special Needs, according to the statement. According to the statement, the 2015 Human Development Report issued by the UN Development Programme has listed Qatar as the first Arab country with very high human development in the light of the progress that has been achieved in the areas of economic, social and environmental development. Qatar's statement delivered by HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, added that from the basis of Qatar's belief in the role of youth and the importance of their participation in all spheres, it took the initiative to hold the Doha Youth Forum on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in April 2015, as well as the Youth Consultation organised by Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2015 as part of the ongoing preparations for the World Humanitarian Summit to be held in Istanbul in May 2016. The statement said that Qatari Silatech Foundation has also developed programs to provide suitable work opportunities for youth in the region in order to improve their situation, as well as seminars to solve the phenomena of extremism and terrorism. The statement also underlined the importance of the family as the fundamental and natural unit of the society, and therefore paying attention to the promotion of policies, strategies and programs that focus on the family is a priority issue for social development. In this regard, the statement said that since hosting the International Conference for the Family in 2004, Qatar was keen to play the role of facilitator for the resolutions of the General Assembly on the International Year of the Family.
