The State of Qatar Stresses Commitment to Fighting Drug Trafficking

New York/ Information Office/ 22 April 2016/ The State of Qatar stressed Friday its commitment to cooperating with the international community to combat drug trafficking. The State of Qatar also expressed its appreciation to the role of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and called on enhancing the role of the office. This came during Qatar's speech in the a UN General Assembly's session on drugs. The speech was delivered by Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bint Saif Al-Thani. Her Excellency added that the State of Qatar will continue its efforts regionally and internationally to fight drug trafficking and exchange intelligence and build the capabilities of its apparatuses. The State of Qatar considered the Doha Declaration signed in 2015 during the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice a major step towards achieving criminal justice. HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN said that drugs is one of the biggest challenges facing the global economy. Her Excellency highlighted represent a health threat to youth and children in particular, which requires more effort from the international community to face this challenge. Her Excellency also expressed concern at the large amount of money that are derived from illegal drug-related activities.
