New York /Information Office/ 22 September 2016/ HE Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani stressed Thursday that Qatar still supports the aspirations of the Syrian people. His Excellency was speaking at a meeting held by the friends of Syria on the sidelines of the 71st UN General Assembly to discuss the future of Syria. HE the Foreign Minister said that the participation of the Syrian opposition in the political process stems out of the latter's keenness on a political resolution to the crisis. HE the Foreign Minister described the opposition's vision for the political solution as comprehensive. His Excellency added that such a vision shows that accusations of the Syrian regime, on the unwillingness of the opposition to find a political resolution, were wide of the mark. HE the Foreign Minister also highlighted the opinion of Staffan de Mistura, who is the United Nations special envoy for the Syria crisis, regarding the seriousness of the opposition in finding a solution. His Excellency said that the first step towards a resolution is to find out the reasons of the crisis before proceeding towards a political transition in accordance to Geneva conference. HE the Foreign Minister maintained that the situation in Syria was complicated, but stressed that he supports the unity and sovereignty of Syria.
