Qatar Stresses Importance of Addressing Roots to Refugees, Displaced Issue

Geneva/Information Office/05 October 2016/ The State of Qatar has stressed the need of exerting more efforts to address the root causes of the issue of refugees and displaced persons, whether been conflicts and wars or natural disasters. This came Wednesday in the speech delivered by HE Ambassador Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab, Qatar's permanent representative at the UN and international organizations' offices in Geneva, during the 67th session of the UNHCR executive committee. HE the ambassador started his speech expressing Qatar's appreciation to the efforts of the UN refugees agency. He also welcomed the appointment of Filippo Grandi as UN high commissioner for refugees. HE Ambassador Al Hanzab affirmed Qatar's keenness on promoting partnership and constructive dialogue with the UN refugee agency. Qatar has sought to contribute to the implementation of UNHCR's programs and the implementation of its humanitarian mission to protect refugees, alleviate their suffering and provide them with the necessary humanitarian needs, he said adding that Qatar has also worked to strengthen partnerships with international humanitarian organizations in order to promote international solidarity and cooperation for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the displaced people and refugees. He pointed that the lengthening of wars and conflicts is a real threat to the future of education for entire generations, and thus it is important to provide educational opportunities to children who suffer from the effects of violence and instability. HE the ambassador said that Qatar's Education Above All Foundation in 2012 launched the Educate a Child initiative with the aim to reduce the number of children deprived from the right to education all over the world. On the sidelines of 71st United Nations General Assembly Qatar Development Fund launched , Qatar's initiative "QUEST", to provide education and training to about 400,000 Syrian refugees within Syria and in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey, he said adding that the cost of the five-year program exceeds $100 million to be contributed by a number of Qatar charitable and humanitarian organizations. He stressed that the Qatari assistance stems purely from humanitarian motives, and from the principle helping the needy, the oppressed and the victims of armed conflicts and natural disasters.
