State of Qatar Stresses Commitment to Supporting UNHCR

Geneva/ Information Office/ 08 December 2016/ The State of Qatar stressed today its commitment to providing the necessary support for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to enable it to face all the challenges facing the implementation of its humanitarian programmes.

This came during a speech made by Third secretary at the Permanent Delegation in Geneva Abdullah Khalifa Al Suwaidi.

He added that the State of Qatar was keen on enhancing cooperation with the UNHCR to help carry out its programme and humanitarian mission of protecting refugees and alleviating their suffering. The State of Qatar has also enhanced its partnership with different humanitarian organizations and showed an aptitude for humanitarian, aid and developmental work.

Al Sulaiti said that HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani stressed during the inauguration of the 45th ordinary session of the Advisory Council on November 1. This was out of the State of Qatar's commitment to its principles that seek to support all humanitarian work and alleviate those distressed wherever they are.

In light of the increasing humanitarian crises and the unprecedented increase in the number of refugees, he announced that the State of Qatar will donate an unconditional $200 thousand to the UNHCR.

In concluding his speech, Al Sulaiti conveyed the appreciation of the State of Qatar to the efforts made by the UNHCR and its Commissioner Filippo Grande in leading work at the international level for protecting refugees.
