Qatar Stresses Commitment for Humanitarian Response Efforts

New York/ Information Office/ 09 December 2016/ The State of Qatar stressed commitment to remain a real reliable partner in humanitarian response efforts based on the principles of neutrality and impartiality.

This came in a statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Mohammed Yahya al-Maliki before the General Assembly of the United Nations on item 69 on "Strengthening of the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the United Nations, including special economic assistance." Al-Maliki said the world has seen in recent years, not only several protracted crises, acts of violence and armed conflicts but also many natural disasters as 346 disasters were reported in 2015 claiming the lives of thousands and affecting millions of people, according to the Secretary-General's report under this item.

These complex conditions have resulted in enormous human suffering and many challenges including unprecedented forced displacement levels, an increasing number of people in need of humanitarian assistance, which resulted in more burdens on the shoulders of the United Nations and all relevant partners in efforts to address humanitarian and development challenges as well as coordinate humanitarian work and assistance, especially in light of the shortage of funding, he said.

In this context, he noted the critical role played by the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to meet the growing humanitarian needs, pointing out that the State of Qatar was and will remain one of the countries supporting CERF as one of the most effective ways to support rapid humanitarian response for people.

He stressed Qatar's keenness to maintain interaction and cooperation with the international community to face all challenges that hinder access to a safe and stable world devoted to implement all commitments agreed by the international community in all areas, including the Sustainable Development Goals.

Al-Maliki emphasized that there is no alternative to cooperation and joint action in order to enjoy a world dominated by the rule of law and respect of human rights, thereby achieving collective results that reduce needs, vulnerabilities and risks.

The State of Qatar has always been among the active countries in the promotion of international peace and security through its diplomatic efforts and special relationships at the regional and international levels along with its active role in the peaceful settlement of crises especially in the Arab region, he said.

The State of Qatar provides support to United Nations agencies and cooperate with it in its humanitarian efforts in the Gaza Strip in order to address the humanitarian situation in the Strip and its positive impact in supporting efforts to achieve peace, he went on saying.

The State of Qatar will continue its humanitarian efforts to meet its obligations for reconstruction of and durable stability in Gaza, he said, referring in this regard to the inauguration of Schools of HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani City built on Hamad Residential City in southern Gaza.
