Qatar Stresses Commitment to Promoting Responsibility to Protect Regionally and Internationally

The State of Qatar in partnership with Italy, chaired Saturday the first meeting of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) members.

HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani stressed today in her speech that The State of Qatar took steps regionally and internationally to enhance Responsibility to Protect.

Her Excellency highlighted the workshop Doha held in partnership with the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect and the GCC council on responding to mass atrocities. HE the ambassador also pointed to Qatar's hosting of the 7th Meeting of the National R2P Focal Points, which took place in April 2017.

Today's meeting, which was hosted by the EU delegation to the UN, reviewed the steps taken by the group to promote the concept regionally and internationally. United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the Responsibility to Protect Ivan Simonovic, UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for the Prevention of Genocide Adama Dieng, Executive Director of R2P Simon Adams all participated in the meeting along with a host of other permanent representatives to the UN.
