The State of Qatar Calls for Resolving Differences Through Dialogue and Respect of Sovereignty

Cairo / Information Office / March 06

The State of Qatar stressed that the dangers and challenges facing the Arab nation require the resolution of differences based on the principle of dialogue, respect for the sovereignty and independence of States and non-interference in the internal affairs of any State.

This came in the speech of the State of Qatar at the opening session of the 151st session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the level of Foreign Ministers, which was delivered today by HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi. His Excellency noted that the Arab world was facing many dramatic developments that will reflect on all its issues, primarily Palestine.

His Excellency reiterated Qatar's steadfast stance and support for the Palestinian cause and the firm rights of the brotherly Palestinian people, led by their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on the borders of June 4 of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance to international resolutions on the matter. He added that the Arab world must work together to ensure the realization of that goal.

His Excellency discussed the situation in Yemen, describing it as tragic due to the destruction and killing that is taking place there. He said that the Arab countries must push all parties in conflict there towards a national reconciliation in line with the GCC initiative and UN Security Council resolution no. 2216.

HE the Minister of State reaffirmed Qatar's firm stance and keenness on Yemen's unity, independence and territorial integrity, calling on the international community to help the Yemeni people to overcome these conditions. He also called on them to take the appropriate measures to ensure that the dangerous humanitarian conditions do not deteriorate.

His Excellency noted that the State of Qatar is committed to alleviating the unprecedented human suffering suffered by the brotherly Yemeni people. He noted in that regard the announcement made by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during the 73rd UN General Assembly, allocating $70 million for Yemen, and the announcement made in February 2019 of responding to the plan of the United Nations for $27 million humanitarian aid to Yemen. The State of Qatar provided assistance in previous years worth more than $600 million.

His Excellency then discussed the situation in Libya and noted that outside interference in the affairs of the country could threaten its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. He noted that it would also further complicate the crisis and prevent reaching the national consensus sought by the Libyans. He added that, as a result, the State of Qatar stresses its support to the Skhirat agreement signed in December of 2015, and calls on all Libyans to hold on to dialogue without exclusion of any segment of society, in order to reach a comprehensive political resolution that maintains the sovereignty of Libya and realizes the aspirations of its people for security and stability.
