Workshop on Universal Periodic Review Mechanism on Human Rights Concluded

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Human Rights concluded today at the ministry's headquarters a workshop on the universal periodic review mechanism on human rights in cooperation with Geneva Institute for Human Rights, and the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region. Representatives of different ministries, institutions, and civil society organizations are taking part in the event.

In a speech at the closing session, HE Director of Department of Human Rights of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Faisal Al Henzab said that the workshop, which was organized within the framework of the state's preparations for discussing its third periodic report before the Universal Periodic Review's working group in May, achieved the desired goals, and enriched the knowledge and culture of the participants.

He stressed that everyone will work to harness what was learned during the two-day workshop to serve the State of Qatar, adding they will do more work and training courses on several topics during the coming period.

Director of the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region Dr Abdel Salam Sidahmed praised the partnership between the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Human Rights, and the Geneva Institute for Human Rights in the implementation of this workshop, and stressed his aspiration to continue cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on issues of common concern, and on following up the implementation of other training activities.

Executive Director of Geneva Institute for Human Rights Nizar Abdelkader said that the workshop contributed to the training of national cadres on the universal periodic review mechanism on human rights, hailing the partnership between the implementing parties of the workshop, stressing it is the beginning of future cooperation between the Geneva Institute for Human Rights and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of Human Rights.

Head of the human rights treaties section of the Ministry Hanadi El Shafei thanked the Geneva Institute for Human Rights and the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region and called for continued partnership with the Department of Human Rights of the Ministry in the future. She also highlighted the workshop's advantages for participants from different institutions.
