Geneva / Information Office / July 09

The State of Qatar expressed Tuesday its satisfaction with the agreement reached by the Transitional Military Council and the Alliance for Freedom and Change in the brotherly Republic of Sudan regarding the formation of the sovereign council and the establishment of a civil government.

The State of Qatar also expressed hope that the agreement will achieve the aspirations of the Sudanese people and their just demands for freedom, peace and justice, stressing their firm position in support of the unity, stability and sovereignty of Sudan.

This came in the speech delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri during the enhanced interactive dialogue on Sudan under agenda item 10 of the 41st session of the Human Rights Council.

Qatar welcomed the interactive dialogue on Sudan, expressing hope that it would contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

HE Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri said that the Qatari delegation had taken note of the progress made with regards to opening a Qatari office for human rights in Sudan, stressing the importance of the establishment of this office as stipulated in Council resolution 39/22.

He explained that given the challenges facing Sudan at this delicate stage in its history, the establishment of such an office would play an important role in improving the human rights situation, which would include technical assistance and capacity-building, which in turn will reflect on stability, social peace, justice and the consolidation of the rule of law.

HE the Ambassador stressed that the State of Qatar reaffirms its commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in the Sudan, based on its firm conviction that the brotherly Sudanese people deserve sustainable peace, stability and development.
