Culture and Arts
The ministry nurtures the cultural and arts movement, holds several regular national cultural and artistic weeks and events at home and abroad; organizes lectures, symposia and poetry recitation evenings; licenses various folklore, theatrical and musical troupes and supervises Qatar’s National Theatre.
Press and Publications
The ministry protects its copyrights and trademarks over the broadcast materials it produces, and issues permits for others to use them. It is also concerned with examining and issuing the necessary licenses for newspapers; publishing houses; bookshops; book importing, exporting and distributing firms; advertising, public relations and artistic production companies; shops selling and distributing artistic production; censoring local and foreign publications and artistic products; issuing newsletters and publications on various aspects of development in the country, which are provided to embassies and diplomatic missions in coordination with the relevant departments.
Department of Heritage
The government pays much attention to the heritage via the Department of Heritage by means of gathering and documenting the public heritage materials, establishing specific archives for public heritage, organizing national heritage-associated events and activities and celebrating heritage occasions as well as supporting those working in them.
Theatre in Qatar
Seeking to develop the theatrical movement in the country, the government established the Department of Culture and Arts in order to follow up and promote the theatrical activity. It has been since 1972 financially supporting the private theatrical troupes to encourage them to improve their works and avoid commercializing them.
In this respect, the Qatari theatrical movement—despite its humble beginnings—has successfully laid down the corner stone for and established a strong presence among its counterparts in the Gulf region and the Arab world; it has toured the entire region and received the gratitude of all the various cultural and theatrical departments.
The first Qatari theatrical troupe was officially recognized in 1972 under the name of the “Qatari Theatrical Troupe.” In the same year, this troupe presented its first theatrical work.
Private Artistic Firms
In early 1986, several private artistic groups began appearing in the field of theatrical production. They presented a set of theatrical works which received big public attendance. Such groups work with actors from the local theatrical troupes as well as actors from the Gulf and Arab countries.
