The consultative meetings of the small group of the National Human Rights Action Plan Committee kicked off on Wednesday to consult with the various stakeholders in the country regarding the proposed strategic goals of the national human rights action plan, and will continue until next Wednesday.

HE Assistant Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Youssef Jassim Al-Thani, chaired the meeting.

In his opening speech, HE Sheikh Mohammed Al-Thani said that the first consultative meeting aims to discuss the first strategic goal of the national plan of action related to establishing a legislative environment consistent with international human rights standards.

He explained that the Cabinet decision at its ninth ordinary meeting of 2017 to form a committee concerned with preparing the national action plan under the chairmanship of HE Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ahmed Hassan Al Hammadi, and the membership of several governmental and non-governmental bodies comes within the framework of the increasing interest the state attaches to the issue of the promotion and protection of human rights, which represents a strategic choice for the State and forms the backbone of the comprehensive reform policy pursued by the State.

Human development and the protection and promotion of human rights are at the top of the priorities of the State of Qatar, HE Assistant Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed. He pointed to the affirmation of this in Qatar National Vision 2030, the first National Development Strategy 2011-2016 and the second National Development Strategy 2018-2022, which included important axes that touch on the main human rights issues in the fields of education, health, the environment, migrant labor rights, women's empowerment and children's rights.
