Qatar Stresses Importance of Accountability for All Responsible for Human Rights Violations in Syria

The State of Qatar stressed the importance of accountability for all those responsible for human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria and bringing them to international justice.
The State of Qatar strongly condemned the Syrian authorities failure to allow the Independent International Commission of Inquiry of the Syrian Arab Republic to enter the country in order to carry out its mandate.
This came in a speech by the Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN in Geneva Abdullah Hamad Al Nuaimi, during the interactive dialogue with the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, within item (4) of the agenda of the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council .
"As we enter the tenth year of the Syrian crisis, we are listening today to another report of the commission of inquiry that reveals to us the magnitude of grave violations and heinous crimes committed against the Syrian people. We express our condemnation and concern about the continuing deterioration of the human rights and humanitarian conditions of the Syrian people referred to in the report, the absence of any horizon for a political solution, and the insistence of the Syrian regime and its allies on the military solution and the politics of the scorched earth," Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to UN said.
Civilians and civilian facilities have always been the main target of violence in Syria. The impact has been evident on women, children, the elderly and people with disabilities. Furthermore, the hospitals, schools and camps for the displaced were considered legitimate targets by the Syrian forces and their allies as well as by terrorist groups, Al Nuaimi added
Killing, destruction and displacement in Syria, especially the city of Idlib, should stir the global moral and human conscience, Al Nuaimi said, calling the international community to assume its legal responsibilities and take all necessary measures to save and protect the Syrian people, pressure the Syrian regime to end military operations and start a real political transition process based on the Geneva Declaration (1) and Security Council Resolution 2254.
