Qatar Participates in the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit

The State of Qatar participated in the United Nations Global Compact Leaders Summit, which is held virtually on June 15-16.

The State of Qatar was represented at the conference by HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi.

In his speech at the conference, His Excellency stressed that the State of Qatar will continue its contributions and effective cooperation in all global and regional efforts to achieve the desired goals towards a more just and equitable world and the ability to face all challenges, adding that it will continue its development path in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030 to achieve sustainable development.

His Excellency said that the issue of climate change occupies an important place in the priorities of the State of Qatar, which played its role as an active partner in the international community during the Summit on Climate Action held in September 2019, noting the announcement of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, about the contribution of the State of Qatar with USD 100 million to support small island developing states and least developed countries to deal with climate change.

His Excellency explained that Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) is implementing this pledge and working alongside strategic partners to help these countries develop effective strategies and implement programs to deal with climate change and promote green growth.

His Excellency pointed out that the State of Qatar, within the framework of its effective partnership in the international community to confront global challenges, will host the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries, which will be held from January 23-27, 2022.

His Excellency stressed that this conference will constitute a very important opportunity to support the efforts of the least developed countries to recover from the Coronavirus pandemic, achieve economic recovery, address the effects of climate change, and build the capacity of these countries to face challenges in the future.

His Excellency pointed out that the private sector enjoys a unique position that enables it to make important contributions to achieving comprehensive sustainable development and providing innovative solutions in various fields, considering that the initiative of the Private Sector Global Facility to confront the Covid-19 pandemic, launched by the United Nations Development Program, with other partners to help local communities recover better from the repercussions of the Coronavirus is a pioneering step to be followed to involve the private sector in global efforts to address the negative effects of the pandemic.

His Excellency pointed out that Qatar Chamber greatly supports this initiative and continues efforts to help companies combat the repercussions of the pandemic on business, adding that the private sector in the State of Qatar also actively participates in international efforts to address the pandemic, and makes important contributions to efforts to achieve the goals and objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan, transition to a green economy and achieve environmental sustainability.

His Excellency explained that the State of Qatar has allocated a multi-year contribution of a total of USD 20 million to support the UNDP Accelerator Labs, and is a founding investor for these laboratories.

His Excellency valued the efforts of this network through the innovative measures and solutions it provides to deal with the coronavirus pandemic crisis, development challenges, developing a set of quick practical solutions, and empowering entrepreneurs and innovators.

His Excellency added that the many current challenges of the escalating crisis of climate change, the coronavirus pandemic, and its dangerous repercussions on all societies underscore the importance of the United Nations Global Compact initiative, which can bring about positive changes to advance the global ambition for collective action, as it represents an innovative partnership to strengthen strategic and effective relations with the private sector which is characterized by its ability and its important role in encouraging sustainable business practices.
