The State of Qatar Reiterates Support to National Unity Government, Presidential Council, Political Process in Libya

The State of Qatar affirmed its support for Libya's Government of National Unity, the Presidential Council and the political process facilitated by the United Nations, and expressed hope that free and fair elections would be held to achieve the aspirations of the Libyan people and preserves Libya's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations in Geneva Mohammed Abdullah Al Buainain at the 48th session of the Human Rights Council, during an interactive dialogue with the fact-finding mission in Libya, under item no. 10 of the council's schedule.

Al Buainain said that Qatar welcomes the fact-finding mission and thanks them for their efforts. He added that, after reading the report, the State of Qatar expressed its great concern regarding the violations international law for human rights and International Humanitarian Law. He also said that the State of Qatar condemns the targeting of civilians, attacking civilian facilities, and besieging civilians for military purposes, in addition to arbitrary detention and torture.

He stressed on the importance of ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for the crimes and human rights violations, calling on all Libyan parties to respect their commitments in light of international laws and agreements on the matter.

He also said that the State of Qatar calls on the international community and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to continue their technical assistance and building of capabilities, particularly in the field of human rights, in line with the priorities and requests made by the Libyan government, help the government tackle illegal immigration and support its efforts in containing the COVID-19 pandemic.
