The State of Qatar reiterated its full support of international efforts aiming to bring comprehensive justice to the Syrian people.
This came during the statement made by HE Assistant Foreign Minister for Regional Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi via video conference in an event organized by the US in cooperation with Syrian Network for Human Rights, with high-level participation from the State of Qatar, US, The Netherlands, the Federal Republic of Germany.
His Excellency expressed appreciation to the organizers of this important event, adding that Qatar shares its deep concern about human rights situation in Syria over the past years. He said that the difficult situation experienced by the Syrians has resulted in the displacement of millions of refugees around the world, the detention and torture of thousands, the destruction of cities and the demolition of buildings. He expressed his regrets that the crisis deteriorated as a result of the earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria, but noted that the State of Qatar was swift in building an airbridge and sent personnel to help in the rescue process, in a bid to alleviate the suffering of those impacted.
His Excellency pointed out that the State of Qatar supported the United Nations Human Rights Council in its endeavor to establish the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, noting that the State of Qatar is the main sponsor of the international, impartial and independent mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes, according to the classification. international law committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011.
He said that Qatar hopes its support of the mechanism will lead to the achievement of comprehensive justice for the Syrian people and all those impacted.
The Assistant Foreign Minister for Regional Affairs stressed that the State of Qatar is working proactively and participating in every effort to resolve the Syrian crisis with all our international partners and the United Nations, and the State of Qatar adheres to its firm position that the only solution to this crisis is through finding a political solution agreed upon by all Syrian parties, in accordance with the Geneva I and Security Council Resolution No. 2254, in a way that preserves the unity and sovereignty of Syria and fulfills the aspirations of its people for security and stability. His Excellency added that the State of Qatar will continue supporting all efforts aiming to support people in Syria, and encouraged Qatar's international partners to continue their efforts in the political and humanitarian fields, given the complications that doesn't serve those struggling as a result of the crisis.
