New York/ Information Office/ 24 October 2015/ The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf reaffirmed their commitment to the spirit and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations on the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of the United Nations. Qatar's Deputy Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations Abdurrahman Yaqoub Al Hammadi delivered a statement on behalf of the GCC member states before the 70th session of the UN General Assembly meeting, held on the occasion. Al Hammadi said that signing the Charter of the United Nations represents the launch of a historic stage that changed the course of history. The founding of the United Nations was a turning point in international relations, and the beginning of a historic stage to find a balanced international environment to achieve peace and prosperity for the peoples and to promote human dignity. He said that the United Nations have succeeded to save the lives of millions of people, however, main and crucial issues remain without solution, in particular the Palestinian cause. He pointed out that the sufferance of the Palestinian people, the violations in Jerusalem, the attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque and on worshipers, and the provocation of feelings of more than one billion Muslims and the flagrant aggression on the Islamic nation represent a violation of the international law and the resolutions of international legitimacy. He also highlighted the Syrian crisis which threatens the regional and international peace and security, and regretted the international community failure to assume its responsibilities as identified by the Charter of the United Nations. On the UN seventieth anniversary, we must review the accomplishments of the organization and its failures and the obstacles it faces in order to cope with the international developments, he said. Concluding, Al Hammadi reiterated the GCC commitment to the principles and purposes of the UN Charter to achieve the desired goals and prosperity for all.
