Qatar Fully Supports UN Security Council Resolutions for Civilians Protection

New York /Information Office/ 20 January 2016/ The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its support for all resolutions and measures taken by the UN Security Council to protect civilians from violations and crimes committed against them, including entrench respect for international conventions approved by the international community. It stressed that the protection of civilians, requires collective work in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, in order to put an end to violations of which they are exposed during armed conflicts, and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Qatar warned that the prevalence of impunity encourages perpetrators to proceed with the infringement on the lives and dignity of individuals and peoples and lead to further violations. This came in a statement delivered here by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to UN Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al -Thani, at the open debate of the UN Security Council on the protection of civilians during armed conflicts in New York. She noted that despite the significant progress witnessed by the international community to abide by international conventions, including the contents of a deterrent provisions and clear and concrete penalties as well as rulings of international courts against the perpetrators of serious crimes, but the world is still witnessing serious violations and increased the frequency of the crimes committed against civilians, in defiance of the will of the International, and the indifference of the results that ensue violation of international humanitarian law.(MORE) HE Sheikha Alia Al -Thani confirmed that the continued illegal Israeli practices against the civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, is a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights, and undermines every effort to achieve a two-state solution according to the consensus of the international community. HE Sheikha Alia called on the UN Security Council to protect the Palestinian people and ensure that they obtain their legitimate rights and to intervene to stop violations against them and to ensure Israel's compliance with their obligations under international humanitarian law, and the implementation of international resolutions on Palestine. HE Sheikha Alia also pointed to the deterioration of the civilian situation in Syria because of the continuation of the Syrian regime and its cronies systematically in their systematic crimes against unarmed civilians and the use of all means prohibited by international conventions, including the continuation of the systematic siege of civilian areas policy and starvation of civilians and indiscriminate bombing by using explosive barrels, which are war crimes and crimes against humanity and a flagrant violation of Security Council resolutions related to the humanitarian situation in Syria. Sheikha Alia also referred to images of children, women and the elderly in Madaya who are dying of starvation as a result of the military blockade imposed by militias the Syrian regime militias and forces, in an attempt to give a choice for the town's people between hunger or kneeling to the regime which continues to kill its people.
