Al Nasr Calls on Cooperation by the International Community to Combat Violent Extremism

HE United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr stressed on the importance of cooperation among members of the international community, and civil society to combat violent extremism and prevent the youth from becoming a part of it.

His Excellency was speaking at an international conference for the North-South Center for the Council of Europe in the city of Lisbon. The conference was on 'Managing Migration, Avoiding Populism, Building Inclusive Societies and Reinforcing the North-South Dialogue.' Al Nasr called for enhancing dialogue between different cultures in order to establish common grounds that leads to mutual respect.

The United Nations High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations had met during the forum with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal Augusto Santos Silva. They discussed the programmes and activities of the Alliance of Civilizations that aim to empower youth and civil society as peace ambassadors while engaging with their communities.

The forum, which was inaugurated by the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, discussed four subjects. The first was on how to manage immigration. The second discussed ways to avoid populism. The third focused on building an inclusive society. The final topic was on enhancing dialogue between the North and South of Europe.

The conference is organized annually by the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity, which has been based in Lisbon since 1994.
