The State of Qatar Highlights Important Role of Women in Development

The State of Qatar stressed Monday the role of women in achieving development and their active contribution to the renaissance of society.

This came in the speech of the State of Qatar delivered by Second Secretary at Qatar's Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva Muneera Mohammed Al Rumaihi at the 41st session of the Human Rights Council day two of the Annual Full-Day Discussion on the Human Rights of Women.

She highlighted the important role of women in general, and older women in particular, in ensuring the stability of society and maintaining values and social traditions. She added that woman also play an important role in development and economic progress.

She noted that the State of Qatar as adopted a number of institutional and legislative measures to guarantee the access of the elderly and women to social services that they need. The Qatari constitution in article 21 focused on looking after the elderly as well as protecting the family and society. The state also established Ihsan center, which is dedicated to providing the elderly with their basic needs.

She stressed that the State of Qatar is focused on empowering women and building their capabilities to contribute to the country's comprehensive renaissance. She noted that the country adopted a number of initiatives that enhances the engagement of women in the job market, politically, and in decision-making positions.

In conclusion, she asked what role can older women playing in realizing the goals of sustainable development, and what is a state's role in encouraging that segment to embrace their role.
