Qatar Calls on UNHRC to Increase Efforts in Protecting Journalists in Occupied Palestinian Territories

The State of Qatar called on the Human Rights Council to increase its efforts in protecting journalists and activists in the occupied Palestinian territories, who lose their lives trying to tell the truth. Qatar called on the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders to pay special attention to them in future reports.

This came in the speech of the State of Qatar, delivered by Third Secretary at the international organization's department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed Al Hammadi at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva during an interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.

Al Hammadi said that the State of Qatar appreciates the important role individuals and organizations play in enhancing human rights during peace and war time. He added that the State of Qatar stresses the importance of protecting activists and journalists from all violations against them.

Al Hammadi noted that the State of Qatar hosted on February 16 and February 17 on social media and the challenges facing the means to support freedoms and protect activists. The event was organized by the National Human Rights Committee and the High Commissioner of Human Rights, the European Union, the International Federation of Journalists, and The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions. He said that the conference shed light on a number of issues related to the role of social media in enhancing human rights and the violations activists around the world suffer from.
