Qatar Has No Geo-Political Interests in Syria, HE Foreign Minister Says

Doha/Information office/ 20 October 2015/ HE the Foreign Minister Dr. Khalid bin Mohammed Al Attiyah said Tuesday that the State of Qatar has no geo-political interests in Syria, stressing that the country is committed to helping the Syrian people overcome the violence. noting that if we followed the Qatari situation from the first day we have made all the attempts and knocked all the door to find a peaceful solution to Syria, but when we saw the bloodletting who found that we should stand beside the Syrian people. Responding to a question on the Qatari role in Syria on the ground, HE Al Attiyah criticized in an interview with the US CNN network the inability of United Nations Security Council to take action on Syria. As a result, Qatar is working with "our friends in Syria, to do whatever we can to protect the Syrian people," HE the Foreign Minister said. He explained that the moderate Syrian opposition were fighting on two fronts. The first is against the Syrian regime. The second is against terrorist groups. HE the Minister said that there were many ways to "enhance" the capabilities of moderate opposition in its fight. On whether the emergence of the so-called the power of 4+1, namely the Syrian regime, Russia, Iraq and Iran + Hezbollah causes concern to Qatar and Saudi Arabia, HE the Foreign Minister said that the way to face such a development is to have a series dialogue to solve any issues. His Excellency the Foreign Minister said that State of Qatar and Saudi Araba do not fear any confrontation. "We believe in peace, and we know that the shortest way to peace is a direct dialogue," His Excellency said. Responding to a question on whether Qatar called for dialogue with Iran out of concern the latter could be a serious competitor in the LNG field, HE the Foreign Minister criticized such comments saying that Qatar's aims to diversify its economy away from LNG exports. "Our critics are ignorant because they didn't have time to read Qatar Vision 2030," HE the Minister said before adding "if the day come when we don't have oil and gas, we'd still keep our people's lives in the standard they are living today."
