Qatar Reiterates Support for Efforts to Eradicate Poverty, Promote Sustainable Development

New York/ Information Office/ 02 November 2015/ Qatar is committed to exerting efforts to improve food security and actively help in promoting ways to handle the issue of agricultural development and food security on national, regional and international levels so as to eradicate poverty and enhance sustainable development. Sultan Ali Al Khayareen, member of Qatar's delegation to the 70th U.N. general Assembly, made the remarks as he addressed the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) on agriculture development, food security and nutrition. He added that achieving better outcomes requires more efforts in the fields of health, agriculture, education, gender equality, nutrition, sewage disposal, water and energy, which are all necessary for eradicating poverty and hunger and achieving sustainable development. Al Khayareen stressed that Qatar pays special attention to the issue of food security, nutrition and sustainable agriculture because of their close links to poverty eradication and addressing drought, desertification and land degradation. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between nations and encouraging and assisting developing countries in tackling challenges in the field of agricultural development in order to mitigate the repercussions of unemployment, increase food production, achieve agricultural development and food security, and alleviate poverty.
