UNHRC Adopts Qatar-Proposed Resolution On Protection Of The Family

Geneva/Information Office/ 01 July 2016/ The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), at the end of it regular 32nd session today adopted the draft resolution on the Protection of the Family , 'The role of the family in supporting the promotion and protection of human rights for persons with disabilities'. The Draft resolution, was proposed by HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva Faisal bin Abdullah Al Hanzab along with representatives of Egypt and Belarus. The resolution shed light on the concept of the family as the natural basic unit of the society, in which all individuals should arise, especially children, and thus entitled to protection and support from the state and society as stipulated in the international covenants of human rights. The resolution stressed the important role played by the family in achieving social cohesion and solidarity between generations as well as maintaining identity and cultural traditions and values in society. It pointed to the great contribution of the family, in achieving social development, calling on all states, the United Nations and other international organizations, to take into account the role of the family in the efforts to implement the 2030 sustainable development goals. With regard to persons with disabilities in particular, the resolution highlighted the various aspects of support provided by family and explained the challenges facing families which have people with disabilities.
