Qatar Stresses Importance of Universal Jurisdiction in Addressing Human Rights Violations

New York/Information Office/12 October 2016/ The State of Qatar has stressed the importance of exercising universal jurisdiction in accordance with the agreed mechanisms, and in the framework of international cooperation. Addressing the Sixth Committee of the UN General Assembly, member of Qatar's delegation participating in the UNGA 71 session Asmaa Jumaa Al Sulaiti stressed the importance of taking into account the balance between the gradual development of the principle of universal jurisdiction and the respect for the principle of fairness and the principles contained in the UN Charter, including sovereign equality, and other provisions of international law. She highlighted Qatar's attention to the universal jurisdiction based on its well-known support of the international community's efforts, and cooperation among nations, to counter international crimes and serious violations of human rights. She pointed out that the State of Qatar considers the issue of universal jurisdiction as mechanism of the rule of law to ensure fair justice and the fight against impunity for serious crimes and violations of international law and human rights.
