Qatar Pays Particular Attention to Promotion of International Law and Rule of Law

New York/Information Office/17 October 2016/ The State of Qatar has payed particular attention to the promotion of the international law and the rule of law at the national and regional levels. In this context, the State of Qatar was keen on involving diplomats and specialists in international law in the sessions of the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching of International Law, as it has continued to provide financial support for the program, based on its policy in which the international law is one of its basic pillars. This came in a statement delivered by member of Qatar's delegation at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly Saud Meqbel Al Qahtani before the UN Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study and Wider Appreciation of International Law. Al Qahtani said that Qatar supports all efforts that help the program to continue its task and provides financial resources to achieve this, whether through the regular budget or direct support from States for the regional sessions of the programme to enable the two laws and those concerned to international law to participate, particularly from developing countries that need to provide financial resources for the participation of their candidates to those sessions. He stressed in the statement that the State of Qatar will continue to provide all possible support for the United Nations Programme to assist in the teaching of the International Law, expressing Qatar's belief in the importance of this program and the role played by the Legal Codification Division. Al Qahtani also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the United Nations Programme to assist in the teaching, study, dissemination and wider appreciation of International Law and commended the report of the Secretary General on the issue. He stressed that the establishment of the United Nations marked the beginning of a new era in international relations based on international law and the rule of law, in order to ensure the achievement of the UN objectives, particularly the international peace and security. Meanwhile, he explained that in the light of this context, there was a need to increase awareness of the importance of international law and uphold the rule of law, adding that the United Nations Programme to assist in the teaching, study, dissemination and wider appreciation of International Law took this task for more than half a century during which it laid the foundation of the UN efforts to improve the knowledge of international law and provided a great benefit to generations of legal experts and specialists from the Member States and international organizations. He also indicated that despite the long time in working in this program, the developments witnessed by the international community confirmed the growing need for the continuation of this program, because it aims to promote international peace and security and to develop friendly relations, respect and cooperation between countries through the compliance to international law. Member of Qatar's delegation at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly Saud Meqbel Al Qahtani said in the statement that the UN Audiovisual Library of International Law plays, within the same context, a complementary role through the sessions organised by the legal Codification Division in the field of international law and the rule of law which is an essential condition to maintain international peace and security.
