Qatar Warns of Geographical Spread of Violence and Extremism

New York /Information Office/ 10 December 2015/ Qatar has earlier warned against the geographical spread of violence and extremism, noting that there is no country or region immune to this threat, which affects the people worldwide, regardless of race, religion and variance of socio-economic references. This came in a speech delivered here by HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, before a meeting held by Qatar's permanent mission to the UN in cooperation with the permanent mission of Switzerland to the UN along with the Global Community Engagement and Resilience Fund (GCERF), in New York, United Nations Headquarters, on role of the GCERF and the fight against violent extremism. HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia believed that security measures are not enough to counter terrorism, pointing out that force alone is not enough to addressing causes of the problem rather than factors that would lead to involvement in violent extremism and radicalization. The Qatari diplomat noted that security reactions would aggravate tension and contribute more to supporting the violent ideologies, stressing that prevention, dialogue and trust are important elements to combat violent extremism, adding that the involvement of communities and enhancing resilience are important components of national and international effort to combat violent extremism and its prevention. HE Ambassador Sheikha Alia pointed to the important role played by the GCERF which works to support local communities in different countries to prevent and combat violent extremism, as a first global initiative aimed at enhancing skills, potential and resources of both the public and private sectors to support local projects , such as education, vocational training, civic engagement , media and defense of women's rights in an attempt to increase resilience against violent militants agendas that will create real barriers to economic and political development. She also highlighted Qatar's contribution to the GCERF, which was established by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to support the fight against money laundering and the financing of terrorism, she referred to the agreement signed by the State of Qatar with the GCERF coordinating committee at the meeting that was held in Doha in 2015, under which Qatar has donated $ 5 million to the Fund.
