Qatar's Development Initiative in Darfur Continues in 2nd Phase

Khartoum/Information Office/ 21 March 2016/ The implementation of the second phase of services and development projects within Qatar's initiative to develop Darfur is ongoing with the aim of bringing lasting peace and stability to the region and turning its communities into productive ones, HE Qatar's Ambassador to Sudan Rashid Abdulrahman Abdulla Al Nuaimi said. Speaking to Sudanese news agency SUNA on Monday, HE the ambassador said the phase includes establishment of 10 service complexes in Darfur provinces at a total cost of $70 million. Entities from Qatar, the Sudanese government and Darfur Regional Authority are executing the projects. HE Al Nuaimi said the first stage of Qatar's initiative for development in Darfur included the establishment of five model service complexes, which were inaugurated by the end of 2015. HE praised the substantial role played by the peace process partners in Darfur in order to help in the successful implementation of the Doha peace agreement on the ground. He also hailed the role of the Qatari organizations working in Sudan, which supervised the execution of the Qatari initiative's projects in Darfur as well as development and services projects in other Sudanese provinces. HE Al Nuaimi said Qatar's participation in the efforts for achieving peaceful solution in Darfur was motivated by the distinguished relations with Sudan, which culminated in the signing of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur. He added that Qatar's efforts in supporting peace in Sudan were not limited to signing the agreement but extended to include the implementation of services and development projects, which helped Darfur residents return to their normal daily life, promote self-reliance and move from humanitarian grants into development projects that will open wider horizons for investors so as to maximize the benefit from the region's rich resources.
