New York/Information Office/ 22 September 2016/ The State of Qatar has provided nearly $ 1.6 billion in order to help alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people inside and outside Syria, through international humanitarian organizations and donor conferences, said HE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. Addressing a summit on refugees called for by US President Barack Obama, held in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of the General Assembly of the United HE the Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that the State of Qatar had funded the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) programs in 2013. HE the Minister said that the State of Qatar during the years 2013 to 2014 provided more than $121 million for refugees in Turkey and Jordan. HE the Minister also referred to Educate A Child (EAC), a programme of the Qatar based Education Above All Foundation (EAA), which had succeeded in securing the return of 600,000 Syrian refugee child to schools, is expected to number up to one million by the end of this year. He also said that the State of Qatar has allocated $ 20 million for the education and training of a million Syrians, explaining that Education Above All Foundation (EAA) is supporting refugee education in refuge areas, and that the State of Qatar had adopted education of 100 Syrian student of refugees at the Sorbonne in Paris . "The experience of long years of suffering of our Arab peoples had thrown hope of the ability of politics and international law to find a fair and lasting solutions to the conflicts and crises in the region.", HE the Minister added. HE the Minister also reviewed Qatar continued support for efforts to help the Syrians and Palestinian refugees and alleviate their suffering adding that Qatar is still continuing and for long years supports (UNRWA) programs, especially in the field of education including building and renovation of schools at a cost of nearly six million dollars. The State of Qatar has renewed its pledge to allocate $20 million to finance education and professional development for refugees, which is part of its pledge to provide $100 million for the benefit of the Syrian people, at the London Conference, held last February in support of Syria and the region, HE the Minister noted. He added that Qatar is now hosting more than 60,000 of brethren Syrians living along with Qatari brothers, as well as the reunion of 7000 people to their families residing in Qatar.
