The State of Qatar reiterated its commitment to supporting development efforts for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and assisting them in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani at the meeting held at the UN Headquarters in New York on the development of LDCs and to follow up the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) for the decade 2011-2020.
HE the Permanent Representative to the UN expressed the State of Qatar's welcome to host the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries in March 2021. She stressed that hosting this conference reflects the State of Qatar's commitment to ensure prosperity for all and transform the aspirations of Vision 2030 to a fact for brothers in the Least Developed Countries.
The Conference also reflects a sense of solidarity to ensure the economic, sustainable and inclusive growth of LDCs, which would have positive repercussions on the global economic landscape, HE added.
HE Sheikha Alya emphasised the responsibility to ensure the success of the fifth Conference to achieve its goals in order to serve as a building block in the ongoing efforts in supporting the least developed countries, noting the State of Qatar's efforts to hold the conference with the United Nations and with the real stakeholders.
She pointed out that as part of its efforts to make the fifth conference a success, the State of Qatar contributed $500,000 to the trust fund for the conference and its preparatory process.
In this context, HE Ambassador Sheikha Alya stressed Qatar's support to LDCs through a number of initiatives, expressing Qatar's pride as an active, responsible and credible partner in supporting LDCs to overcome obstacles to sustainable development and economic growth.
Her Excellency hailed that HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani's announcement at the United Nations Climate Action Summit last September that Qatar will contribute $100 million for the support of small developing island states and the least developed states to deal with the dire consequences of climate change.
Concluding the statement, HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN said that the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries is an important opportunity to renew and revitalize the global partnership and to continue to promote concrete international actions in support of the LDCs, affirming that in this way the main objective of the 2030 Agenda for Development would be achieved, which is the eradication of poverty everywhere.
